Woodworking was a hobby during Nick Van Bakel’s 34 year career in education, but upon retirement, he set up his woodworking shop near Barrie, Ontario.  Here he initially built furniture for himself, his children and for sale to others.  In 1998 Nick purchased his first woodworking lathe which resulted in a sharp turn of direction.

He was enthralled by the potential of the lathe for creating beautiful works of art and was inspired by the natural beauy of so many of our local woods.  In 2003, Nick spent a number of days in Wyoming, USA in Curt Theobald's woodturning studio.  It is there that Nick received his first training in segmented turning, a form of woodturning which now takes up much of his time.

Nick's work is sold from his home studio, and a few carefully chosen galleries.  Many of his segmented bowls contain two and three hundred individual pieces of wood.  His fine craftsmanship and artistry is noted by art collectors and others who recognize that his works are heirlooms that will stand the test of time.
