Although born in England and raised in America, Mark has spent most of his time in Canada. Currently he enjoys life with his wife, Susan, and creates from his 650 square foot studio/workshop located in the picturesque rolling ‘Cavan hills’ region of Ontario.
Mark’s professional training was in the visual and audio arts, but he has practiced and studied crafting objects in wood since he was a child. After two decades in industry and management, he has devoted himself full time since 1991 to creating finely crafted artistic and functional lathe work and furniture for gallery sale and commission.
Mark's work features distinctive original design, unique concepts, attention to detail and function plus artistry in the selection, crafting and completion of each individual piece. Woods that Mark enjoys incorporating are native maples, walnut and cherry along with sustainable exotics such as Swiss pear veneer, pau amarello, padauk, bloodwood and bubinga for their durability and attractive colour. Sensitive to forestry, environmental and human concerns, Mark uses only responsibly harvested sustainable woods and non toxic finishes. In some works, Mark also enjoys adding other media including paper, metal, fabric, gold and other foils, paint and dyes. Contrasting textures are also often employed through selective carving and torching to release the wood’s latent properties.
Mark founded and presided over the very active Woodturners Guild of Ontario and held four terms as President of the Canadian Woodturners Association from 1992-2000.
In addition to his creative pursuits, Mark is a recognized demonstrator, instructor, technical writer and consultant to the woodworking tool/machinery industry, informing and inspiring craftspeople and guilds.
Creations from Salusbury Studios Limited are featured in numerous corporate, government and private collections internationally. Marks work is represented by select galleries across Canada.

The pieces Mark creates are all easily maintained. Decorative pieces should be treated as you would any of your fine collectibles, with care and occasional light waxing to enrich the patina and sheen. Functional works such as boards and salad servers should be washed in soapy water, rinsed well, air dried preferably allowing them to dry uniformly and occasionally treated to an application of ‘light’ mineral oil (available at any drug store).
