David Thai

The hand blown glass of Toronto artist, David Thai, is impressive in size yet elegant. He is inspired by the intricate cane work and use of precious metals employed by the Italian master glassbowers and designers. Through the exploration of their techniques, he has discovered a perfect balance of craftsmanship and concept. His “Landscape Vessel” series is inspired by the constellations; he tries to capture their sentiment through the use of Japanese silver foil and a form which is reminiscent of star maps. David’s “Classical” series interprets the form of classic Asian vessels and utilizes the same silver foil application.

David graduated from the Sheridan College of Craft and Design in 2002 with a major in glass. He apprenticed with established glass blower, Andrew Kuntz, at the legendary Glen Williams Glass Studios and shared his extensive knowledge in glass blowing techniques by teaching for a year at Sheridan and Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre. David Thai has received a number of awards, participated in major Canadian and American group exhibitions, been featured in solo shows throughout Ontario and is one of several glass artists now in residency at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga, Ontario.
